Who We Are
The Exeter Dementia Action Alliance is a small group of people raising awareness of dementia and working towards a dementia-friendly city. We are a membership organisation and wish to inspire organisations and businesses to join us in making practical changes.
We seek to empower people living with dementia and their families. This will inform our objectives and ensure they are at the heart of our vision.
We are part of the national Dementia Action Alliance network and were officially awarded the status ‘Working Towards a Dementia Friendly City’ in May 2015.
The Alliance was formed and is led by Gina Awad. She trained as a Dementia Friends Champion in 2014 and had a vision to create a Dementia Friendly city. Gina is passionate about the needs of people living with dementia and their families, recognising a whole community response is essential. Gina Awad was awarded City Ambassador at the Pride of Exeter Awards 2015 and volunteer of the Year in the Pride of Devon Awards 2015. In 2016 she was awarded the Dementia Friends Champion of the Year by the Alzheimer’s Society.
Colin Bray works for Libraries Unlimited and trained as a Dementia Friends Champion in 2014. Colin supports Gina and is part of a small group meeting quarterly who are working to encourage positive change in the city. Like so many people his family has been touched by dementia, and this provides his motivation to work towards a dementia friendly city.
